and
indeed to all the riders!

Now, a more detailed (read as verbose) report of the race as seen from
the support car :-)

The race day dawned bright and sunny - just the kind of weather to
make one jump out of bed and get on the cycle and put in the much-
needed kilometres. Hmm, actually it was dark and rainy and made one
give up whatever hopes one had of a biggist turnout. But had to get
to the start in any case, so half an hour and a hot cup of coffee
later I was in my car on the road. I was at the designated point at
around 4:50 am. The rain had eased off a bit but was still falling.
By the time Abhin & Raghu called in at 5:30 to say they were on the
way, it had almost completely stopped and I'd had a nice mini-cup of
tea.

Abhin & Raghu arrived around 5:40AM and soon got their Trek's out of
the Scorpio. Pradeep was next on his deceptively slim looking bike -
it was heavy! He'd planned to just come up to the start point and meet
up with the rest and then bike back - but he stayed and put in a
creditable performance too. Cramped in the front seatof Gaurav's car
were Gaurav, Ashish & Mallik. Ashish on Ravi's Trek, Gaurav on his
own 4300. Sudhir joined in on his Merida hybrid. Cars parked on the
service road, all got busy putting their bikes together. Abhin had
road tires on his bike and he somehow managed to bend the delicate
Presta valve on the rear wheel. No spare tube - which meant he
couldn't race. A big disappointment for him. The rest of the riders
were all set by 6:30 and were flagged off (without a flag) @ 6:33. We
had a race on our hands after all!

The guys really took off and it was a goodish while before we caught
up with the first of the riders - Pradeep doing well. Ahead were
Raghu, Sudhir, Ashish, with Gaurav leading. We stayed with the leader
and stopped at the Nandi hill road turning on the highway. First to
show up was Gaurav - he'd done the 27 kms under one hour. No stopping
for bananas or electral or plain water for him as he continued on to
the Nandi road. Ten minutes later Ashish was here - no stopping for
him either. Sudhir & Pradeep arrived in a few minutes as did Abhin &
Zaheer in their Scorpio - Raghu had had a run-in with a evil-minded
lorry and had taken a fall - luckily no heavy injuries, and he landed
up at 7:47. A banana each and they were on their way again. Good
going by all concerned!

Mallik & I started off for the Nandi base passing Ashish who was
pedalling away steadily, and then Gaurav. Tea at the the Nandi base
and some Tiger biscuits for us as we waited. Gaurav came by at around
8:15, filled up his water bottle and departed. He was doing the whole
race on two Cadbury's 5 Stars and had finished 1.5 of them. Ashish
was soon there too - he had a banana and some plain water, and was
soon gone, and after waiting a little while, so were Mallik & I.

Mallik predicted a interesting tussle on the hill between Ashish &
Gaurav - as Ashish was very good at climbing. True enough, as he'd
made up the gap between him and Gaurav. The weather was good for
cycling with a heavy cloud cover and the two were hardly breaking a
sweat. Gaurav was first at the top - 8:59 - and first to leave - 8:59
again! Ashish was next at 9:00 - and he too left at 9:00 - no one
wanted to stay even for a minute apparently. Both had done the ascent
in 40 min. Meantime Zaheer called to say Pradeep was dropping out
somewhere near the base. Sudhir pedalled into sight at 9:43, had a
bite of banana, some water and sailed out of sight again.

Down at the base Pradeep was getting his front wheel removed from the
bike for transportation. His cycle went into the Scorpio and he
himself came with us as we headed out on the return stretch. Then the
really mystifying Episode of the Serious Cyclists occurred. All of us
were absolutely flummoxed and did not have a clue. We first saw a lone
cyclist coming towards Nandi. Could he have turned up late at the
starting point and then decided to go it alone in any case? Couldn't
be - or else he would have shown some sign? None of us could recognise
him as he went by grimly, ignoring our quizzical looks without a hint
of recognition or awareness. Then, after we took the right turn onto
the road which goes to the highway, we saw six more of these riders -
all on Trek 3700s - in a row. I waved at one - no response. As
Gaurav, Abhin and others recounted later - they too had the same
experience. No response, and all riders not a bit glum. Who were
they? Why were they doing it? Trek riders who never read BBC or
bikeszone - how was that possible? Mysterious indeed.

Putting that behind us, we hurried on to the end point - having
decided on a point more than 10 km ahead of the starting point
beforehand. As we raced, afraid that Gaurav or Ashish might have
already passed that point, we found nary a trace of either of them.
We sped on hoping against hope. And our hopes were dashed soon -
Gaurav called from Yelahanka asking for guidance. That was a fast
return ride indeed! He wanted to go on to the starting point itself.
We ok'd that and plodded on. We saw Ashish on a service road soon and
updated him that the end point would be where we started off, and put
Zaheer/Abhin in the loop too. As we neared the end point, we caught
sight of Gaurav. And as we parked the car, he had reached the end
point! 10:55. Ashish came in at 11:05. Then Abhin came in - Raghu
had stopped at the Nandi road and Abhin at last got to ride! Zaheer
and Raghu joined us and we waited for Sudhir. Much animated
discussions of the bikes and the Episode followed. Would he come to
the end point or turn off at GKVK (where he stays) itsef? 12:04 and
the suspense ended as we saw him trying to cross the highway.

Overall, a good time was had by all. Thanks to the riders for turning
up inspite of the rain and putting in their best, and congrats to
Pradeep for successfully chewing a lot of what he bit off! And
special thanks to Mallik for volunteering!

Regards,
Dinesh.

What is arranged :
Dinesh has volenteered to arrange for Emergency-car, where he can pitch in to help in case of medical emergency or so ( will publish Contact info soon)

In case of broken bike, you will have to arrange for your own transportation back.

We as organizers dont take any reponsiblity of any injury during the race, and you are participating at your own risk.

What does it cost : Nothing .... ! ( YES, Best things in life comes for free)
The plan is to make such races as regular event, at different places in and around Bangalore. Since this is first of it's kind (Not so organized) in Bangalore, we have chosen a very common route as we dont have to navigate, and dont need any special equipment for the same. We plan to have off-road races after we make this race a success.
Thanks and Regards,
~Ravi and Dinesh
